This was one of the earliest posts I did, and I'd hate to have to go back and recount it...but I did some more searching today I can't come up with anything showing them being in MCH. I was going by the 1998 book I linked to in the first post, which says they lived here. I've now found 1785 probate papers for a Hance Shadd, which lists Joseph Rotheram. He owned what would become Harmony Mill. It also looks like the widow's name is Jean Shadd, so maybe it's someone else.

Also, I can find several property sales to and from Jeremiah Shad, but all in Wilmington. Interestingly, the first is from 1799, where Jeremiah buys land from Gabrial Jackson. Jackson and his wife Elizabeth (since deceased) bought it in 1777. But, it lists Jeremiah as being a butcher from Wilmington. I've got another Hance Shadd marrying an Elizabeth Evans in 1821. I've got the inventory of Jeremiah's personal property in 1819. And a Jere Shad in Christiana Hundred in the 1800 census, which probably was Wilmington. So far, nothing linking them the MCH.Scott Palmernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3945719747276028760.post-61223375478038166712019-05-21T11:18:48.582-04:002019-05-21T11:18:48.582-04:00I have been researching the Shad family since I re...I have been researching the Shad family since I read about them in 1997. I nominated Mary Ann Shadd (with successful results) to the Hall of Fame for Delaware Women and the Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. I am currently preparing a application for a State of Delaware historic plaque. I am trying to find out more about the Shadd family in Mill Creek Hundred. I am particulary curious to know where they lived and any information about Hans, Jr. There are a few facts I would add to the narrative of the Shadd family, if you would be interested.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09006698365395047113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3945719747276028760.post-88153318046799628562016-12-05T16:35:03.232-05:002016-12-05T16:35:03.232-05:00Thanks for commenting. I was VERY excited to find a connection to the Shadd's in my genealogical tree due to my interest in the history of my own local area of NW OH and SE MI along with me knowing of the illustrious legacy of the Shadd family.

I also have a lot of genealogical connections to DE and PA due to various other families in my tree that moved to Canada from that area around the same time that the Shadd family emigrated. One of my 4th great grandfathers - Nathan Bailey Enos also lived in Chester County, PA and was originally from DE and lived for a time in the Hinsonville community of Chester County, PA before selling his land and moving to SE Ontario in the North Buxton community. It is interesting how connected the free "colored" population were in that time period and how involved they were in the UGRR.
